Learning Designer in the Making

My name is Wren McDonald, an educator and expert Learning Designer in the making. I see myself as a change-maker who is effectively removing barriers in the learning environment.  I have worked as a teacher in elementary school, a faculty member at a college, taught abroad, been a dean for 4 th -12 th grade, and worked in a University as an administrator. With over 10 years of experience holding various roles within the educational system, I am always looking to learn new skills or strengthen the ones I have. Regardless of the position that I have held, I have always been passionate about the learners and meeting them where they are at, viewing them as a holistic being with a complex story which shapes how they learn. Given this, I recognize that technology is ever-evolving, and in order to best serve students, educators must evolve with it. That said, I have never considered technology to be a strength of mine. To give a frame of reference, I cried while learning Excel from m...

My Communication Plan

My Communication Plan as a Learning Designer I recognize that active listening is a skill that I really shine in. I have a high desire to due well and high expectations of myself. However, that is couple with ADHD, and I can easily “check-out” of conversations. To prevent that, I have found that taking notes on what someone is telling me about is very helpful. I will then repeat back to them what they told me but in my own words to check for understanding. I will also make note of things that I may have questions on and require more clarity to ensure that we are on the same page. Before leaving the conversation, I will usually give a recap of any action items or key take aways relevant to both parties.  Through these actions, I am engaging in providing feedback to the sender which is identified as both the acknowledgment and a reiteration of the conversation to confirm understanding of the message (Tennant et. al 2023).  I have found that this is very helpful in making sure th...

Self-Reflection

Group 26 - Self Reflection of Skaro University Project I am proud of our team and the overall success of the design. We quickly identified who exceled in which areas, and fell into a rhythm easily. Our comfort and respect towards each other helped us to communicate our ideas and perspective on areas that could be improved or to ask questions for help.  Together, we designed our Google Site modules to train faculty on how to make introduction videos. We broke down the modules into several subpages as needed, so there wouldn't be too much information for the learner to digest at once. We utilized images of the process, to help guide them through the steps and created opportunities for them to submit their work after each module. We also included buttons in the pages to support the learner in navigating from module or content page to the next instead of needing to go back to the top of the page and toggle between lessons there. While there were areas for improvement, which I wil...

M1: Assignment - WOL - My Goals As A Learning Designer

If I am being completely transparent, going back to school to obtain my Masters in a field related to education was not on my Bingo card for 2025. That said, I think a lot of people are finding themselves in situations they had not anticipated in 2025. Through a series of unexpected and not entirely unfortunate events, I find myself back in school and seeking to be more entrenched in the field of education. Now, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that I am back in school because those who know me, know that I love to learn. Call it Autism or call it ADHD, but one thing is certain, I derive a great sense of joy and pleasure from learning a wide variety of new things, especially when that knowledge is coming from someone who has a true passion for the topic. To me, there are few things that can rival the pure connection that can be formed when holding space for someone sharing their passion.  It is that connection that is a large motivator for me to pursue my Masters in Education...
